From the crystalline shores of a deserted island to the green grass and dusty roads of 1940s suburban America, Ballard and director of
photography Caleb Deschanel create a film of consistent visual invention and purity, one that
also features a winning supporting performance
by Mickey Rooney as a retired jockey and a gorgeous score
by Carmine Coppola.
It is
also, in the
photography by Roger Deakins, the editing
by the Coens and the music
by Carter Burwell, startlingly beautiful, stark and lonely.
Other great scenes involve the powerful

by Sasha Waters Freyer, Apr. 15; Godard Mon Amour, director Michel Hazanavicius» cool, dramatized portrait of iconic French auteur Jean - Luc Godard (Louis Garrel), as told
by Godard's one - time wife, Anne Wiazemsky, Apr. 15; and, from Japanese master Koreeda Hirokazu, The Third Murder, a chambered nautilus of a murder mystery, starring Fukuyama Masaharu and Yakusho Kôji, Apr. 6.
The screening improved not only
by the presence of the filmmaker and the huntress herself, with her mother, father and (local) eagles, but
also a brief featurette that revealed the actual difficulty of the stunning
photography, which was so flawless in execution that it looked misleadingly easy.
Several critics have compared the character to Woody Allen, and in its content and black - and - white
photography, C.K.'s movie
also consciously echoes Allen's 1979 film Manhattan, in which Allen's character dates a high - school student, played
by Mariel Hemingway.
The music video, co-directed
by Sofia and her brother Roman, who
also did second unit
photography on the film, is maybe the best soundtrack / film tie - in ever produced.
As usual, Asghar Farhadi
also surrounds himself with a first - class team: José Luis Alcaine on
photography (a regular collaborator of Pedro Almodóvar, Carlos Saura and Bigas Luna), the costume designer Sonia Grande (Midnight in Paris
by Woody Allen, The Others
by Alejandro Amenábar), and Iranian editor Hayedeh Safiyari, continuing a long and fruitful collaboration with the director after working together on four of his feature films, including his two Oscar - winning films.
It's a film that no one else could have made — so many of the Coens» favorite tropes are here, from a howling fat man played
by John Goodman to a memorable elevator operator — but it's
also something a little different, not least because of the gloriously nostalgic
photography by Bruno Delbonnel.
Also in 2011 Ben was invited
by the Sundance Institute to join the Feature Film Director's Lab as a Director of
Photography.
Franco does hint at the discord
by showing how the crew mocks Tommy behind his back, but he
also simplifies things
by focusing on two major crewmembers, script supervisor Sandy Schklair (Seth Rogen) and director of
photography Raphael Smadja (Paul Scheer), who he treats as composite characters.
The somber, resigned mood of the picture is
also expressively captured
by the
photography of Larry Smith and in Patrick Cassidy's sonorously elegiac score.
The country's vibrant colors and life are affectionately captured

photography Seamus McGarvey (whose stunning cinematography alone makes the film worthy of a cinema release), with the work of production designer Johnny Breedt and art director Vivienne Gray further giving the place and community a character and pulse of its own: warm and inviting, often funny and friendly, but
