climate change and disease.
Some
climate scientists, including James E. Hansen, former head of the nasa Goddard Institute for Space Studies, say we must
also consider
slower feedbacks such as
changes in the continental ice sheets.
There's been some hope that

But there is some good news: Even seemingly small
changes in curbing greenhouse gas emissions not only can reduce harmful pollutants and clear the air, but
also help to
slow climate change.
The silicate + CO2 - > different silicate + carbonate chemical weathering rate tends to increase with temperature globally, and so is a negative feedback (but is too
slow to damp out short term
changes)-- but chemical weathering is
also affected by vegetation, land area, and terrain (and minerology, though I'm not sure how much that varies among entire mountain ranges or
climate zones)-- ie mountanous regions which are in the vicinity of a warm rainy
climate are ideal for enhancing chemical weathering (see Appalachians in the Paleozoic, more recently the Himalayas).
I wrote about that consensus last year in covering the reports released by the Intergovernmental Panel on

Human - induced forcing exhibited a
slow rise during the early part of the last century but then accelerated after 1960.2 Thus, these graphs highlight observed
changes in
climate during the period of rapid increase in human - caused forcing and
also reveal how well
climate models simulate these observed
changes.

climate change or roll back environmental regulations.
The
slower components of the
climate system (e.g. the ocean and biosphere) affect the statistics of
climate variables (e.g. precipitation) and since they may feel the influence of their initial state at multi decadal time scales, it is possible that
climate changes also depend on the initial state of the
climate system (e.g. Collins, 2002; Pielke, 1998).

Indeed, the long lifetime of fossil fuel carbon in the

slow» feedbacks, such as ice sheet disintegration,
changes of the global vegetation distribution, melting of permafrost, and possible release of methane from methane hydrates on continental shelves, would
also have time to come into play.
And, if we assume the weather in 2050 or 2100 — and, by extension the
climate during that period — remains as unknown today as it has always been and, if we
also agree that
climate change is not getting reversed or
