Unlike the deep - ocean virus that uses guided mutation to
alter a single gene, nanoarchaea target at least four distinct genes.

In the new study, the researchers sequenced the entire genome of mice that had undergone CRISPR
gene editing in the team's previous study and looked for all mutations, including those that only
altered a
single nucleotide.
They found a point mutation in the
gene (a
single altered base pair) in one of 91 randomly selected short individuals, and no such mutations in 300 people of average height — suggesting that about 1 % of all short people may carry a SHOX mutation.
For each
gene, the researchers compared the number of
single letter mutations that
alter the encoded protein versus silent mutations that have no effect.
Typically, genome analysis studies primarily look for
single changes — one
altered unit of DNA — not wholesale copying or halving of
genes.
Hill showed a
single - nucleotide polymorphism — placed in the genome where a
single nucleotide is
altered — in this
gene is «strongly associated» with elite sprint racing performance.
A
single altered gene explains the black wings (left), new data show.
First, Dr. Shendure described some interesting experiments under way in his lab to elucidate the function of non-coding regulatory variants — specifically,
single nucleotide changes in the core promoter that
alter gene transcription.
It was once assumed that environmental factors took generations to affect a
gene change, but research is now finding that a bad enough toxin or environmental stress can
alter genes in a
single generation.
