BE: With each series or new body of work the motivation for me is always the same in that first and foremost, I HAVE to make art.
Do you always work on series of paintings together with this in mind, or might one piece spark another?
Performance: «Second Sundays» at Pioneer Works A monthly series of open studios with the artists - in - residence, exhibitions, live music, Clocktower radio programming and site - specific interventions, «Second Sundays» at Pioneer Works is always a barrel of fun.
Though Art Practical has always published profiles closely examining the work or lives of artists who give lectures or public workshops in the Bay Area, we've dedicated a portion of every issue to the Visiting Artist Profile series since our third year of publication.
Born in 1951, Mann has always remained close to her roots, and she has photographed the American South for many years, producing major series including What Remains (Bullfinch Press, 2003) and Deep South (Bullfinch Press, 2005) Mann lives and works in Lexington, Virginia.
From such early works as Earth Force, Legacy Mantle and Made in China to his most recent series, his focus has always been on the nature of «things» and how this reflects on the relationship between the self and the surrounding world.
The works from the «Portal Series» that we present in our exhibition are remarkable in that they consist of a maximum of three to four neon tubes, always in the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue, and they all are characterized by clear horizontals, verticals, and 45 degree diagonals.
When he was painting them he never isolated the blue works as a single series — the Stable exhibition was the first time that he highlighted them — but rather always produced them alongside other paintings; whether the various types of works involving calligraphic, gestural, or blocked marks in the 1940s, or the red and black paintings he was also making in the early 1950s.
