Among the 600,000 recovery
workers and local residents who received a significant dose of
radiation, the WHO estimates that up to 4,000 of them, or 0.7 percent, will develop a fatal cancer related to Chernobyl.
Yet the WHO has estimated that
among the emergency
workers at the scene, only about 50 died, and over the course of 75 years after the disaster, the
radiation will cause only around 4,000 premature deaths.
