anal glands) in the dog and cat are paired structures that are located at the 4 and 7 o'clock position next to the anus and act as reservoirs for
secretions that are extruded with bowel movements.
The normal clear or pale yellow - brown
secretion will be a thick, pasty brown fluid if the
anal glands have been impacted and abscessed
anal sacs will have a red - brown fluid.
Anal sac size and the color and consistency of its
secretions are highly variable, so give no indication of the problem.
Occasionally, the small ducts which drain the
anal sacs become clogged with this thick
secretion.
