In order to assess this possibility, we ran the
analyses for high
school graduation and college attendance again with an additional control for the total
number of students attending the
school.
In three short years, from the 1996 — 97
school year to that
of 1999 — 2000, the final year
of our
analysis, the
number of charter
schools in operation in North Carolina rose from zero to 74.
