It's one of those
ancient fear things that was created hundreds of years ago when people
still believed that bad things can happen to you if you don't believe in
God and obey Him.
Two thousand years later, the vast majority of the world's population has disregarded the belief that dragons roam the sea, Zeus, Poseidon, and most other
ancient gods (as these people thousands of years ago believed), yet the world inexplicably
still clings to the thousands - year - old myths of

You know all of that, but you're
still able to hear these as true stories, as metaphorical narratives using
ancient archetypal language to make, among other affirmations, that Jesus is the light coming into the darkness, to make the affirmation that the Herods of this world constantly seek to destroy that which is born of
God.

A more
ancient view,
still apparent at many points in the Old Testament, had been that righteousness was rewarded by prosperity and long life in this world, and misfortune was a punishment for sin; but as Israel suffered more and more adversity, and the most faithful individuals and groups were the most oppressed and afflicted, it came to be felt that the humble, the meek, the devout, the poor were the righteous people of
God, and the mighty and prosperous were the proud, wicked oppressors.
But while this «way» was in some sense a new departure, it
still emanated from the context of Israel's
ancient hope in
God's promises.
We have continually to remember that the spring festivals celebrating the return of the vegetation
