The ripples seen by COBE have
angular sizes on the sky greater than 10 degree.
Basically, the distant ripples appear to shrink as the universe expands, so researchers can infer the age of the cosmos from
their angular size on the sky.
Not exact matches
Another result that we don't really understand is that we don't see any temperature fluctuations in the microwave background
on scales larger than 60 degrees [the
angular size in the sky of the fluctuations].
In this case, the measurement was roughly equal to the
angular size of a baseball
on the Moon.
The new technique is similar to that used by land surveyors
on earth, who measure both the physical and
angular — or «apparent» —
size of a distant object, to calculate its distance from Earth.
And the
angular scale of the EHT is astonishing; it will have the power to resolve something the
size of a grape lying
on the surface of the moon.
Note that this effect of
size on the perceived contrast can not be explained by the finite resolution of the visual system, because we used disks with
angular diameter much larger than that of the Airy disk, and the effect was exactly the same for disks of the two different diameters we used.
