issues as our loving
animal companions reach their geriatric years.
SA Amigo magazine, a non-profit bilingual pet magazine located in San Antonio whose goal is to help educate the community on
animal wellness and decreasing
euthanasia rates, has featured the Hierarchy of Dog Needs in their Fall
issue.
There are many ways that
animal control facilities can ensure that
animals keep moving quickly through the system to prevent over-crowding and space and resource
issues which could lead to unnecessary
euthanasia.
Adoption guarantee means that every
animal that is admitted to our shelter is free from the threat of
euthanasia due to time, space, or treatable medical
issues.
Frankly, it's lacking and neglects some key
issues (
euthanasia chambers are still allowed, there is no plan regarding
animal overpopulation and spay / neuter).
Animal Services provides humane
euthanasia service to pet owners who are facing a pet that is suffering from advanced age, debilitating medical conditions and / or severe temperament
issues.
My interview with Auerbach touched on many
issues that she cares about that we did not have time to discuss in depth, including the effect on shelter workers of carrying out
euthanasia decisions, the need to attract and retain leaders in sheltering, and the importance of expanding the focus of sheltering to include
animals outside the shelter.

These volunteers are advocates for the companion
animals and help educate the community on the importance of such
issues, as the intrinsic value of adoption / rehoming over buying a pet; pet homelessness; spay / neuter; responsible pet ownership; and no - kill movement (
euthanasia as a last humane resort).

While shelters should make every effort to find placement for
animals, they should also retain the discretion (delineated in paragraphs (D) and (E) to make appropriate
euthanasia decisions, particularly in instances involving severe medical or behavioral
issues.
Although some
animals are selected for
euthanasia because of age, medical conditions, or behavioral
issues that make them unsuitable for adoption, about 2.4 million of those euthanized were adoption ready.
The AVMA's new direction is more in line with the National

The new law provides for issuance of a limited license to allow
animal shelters and rescues to obtain and administer
euthanasia drugs and authorizes the Board of Veterinary Medicine to
issue regulations for licensing criteria and certification and oversight of certified
euthanasia technicians.
