Animal Control Officers respond to thousands of calls, and many of our officers go into the community off
duty to offer
support, assist
animals and provide dog food for pets of people in need.
The stress on shelter staff is significant: no room to put ever more dogs; having to euthanize dogs to make room for new dogs; performing triage on sick
animals when space is limited; having to make hard choices about evening and weekend heating and lighting with a small budget; no veterinarian or vet tech on the staff; no evening or weekend staff; no time to network adoptable
animals; no available homes in the surrounding communities; inadequate transport vehicles; little or no
support from local government; an
Animal Control Officer often doing double
duty, responsible also for managing the shelter; counties lacking even a shelter or inside kenneling.

animals or assistance service canines through various assistance programs.

support our veterans, active
duty and retired military, Appalachian
Animal Clinic extends a 15 % year - round discount on services.
All dogs within the program have fully sponsored adoption fees, all the specialty supplies they may need (including heavy
duty crates, specialty harnesses, etc.), a «foster to adopt» period where potential adopters can first make sure the
animal is a good fit for their home, and a lifetime of behavioral and training
support through the shelter.
Guardian Angels for Soldier's Pet Assists and
supports active
duty service members, wounded soldiers, and veterans, and their companion
animals or assistance service canines.
To
support this, HSP hosts 15 - 18 year old volunteers that assist our
Animal Caretakers with daily
duties, opportunities to work in customer service, and working with our Development team, learning how our shelter runs behind the scenes.

Veterinarian Assistants provide
support to veterinarians and technicians by completing the following
duties: feeding
animals, making sure their exercising needs are being met, sanitizing surgery units, handling
animals, maintaining records, and completing other tasks as assigned by veterinarians.
Essential job
duties of a Veterinary Nurse are collecting information from
animal owners, taking samples for lab tests, taking X-rays, preparing
animals for procedures, administering medication, advising pet owners on how to care for their
animals, providing
support during surgery, and maintaining records.
