Now one nonprofit group hopes to change that with a pilot project, People and
Animals Living Safely (PALS), that allows
victims of domestic violence to bring pets into their shelter.
Domestic violence victims who are pet owners face a moral dilemma: escape to one
of the 50 or more city shelters that prohibit
animals, or remain at risk.
In addition to the rescue and adoption
of almost 1,000
animals each year, we also provide a low cost spay / neuter program, education programs, free board to
animals of domestic violence victims, volunteer opportunities and are a first response disaster relief team member.
Any member
of a household, including companion
animals, can become
victims of domestic violence.
We have continued to offer our 24/7 injured stray
animal rescue service county - wide; returned 219 lost pets to their worried owners; provided no - cost safe housing for 27 pets
of victims of domestic violence and other emergencies; donated nearly 2,000 pounds
of pet food to area food banks for low - income pet owners; and have reached hundreds
of community members through special events, tours, and presentations to school kids and adults.
Ohio H.B. 55 would have allowed a court to enter an order
of protection in favor
of any companion

The Safe Haven Network is a referral service that works with local
animal shelters to facilitate temporary boarding for pets
of domestic violence victims while they seek help.
The law now allows a judge to grant the petitioner
of a protective order exclusive care, custody, or control
of any
animal owned, possessed, leased, kept, or held by the
victim, the abuser, or a minor child in the household; the law also allows a judge to order the abuser to stay away from the pet in both temporary and final
