As companies rush to protect their IP, the total
number of annual patent applications worldwide has soared — up almost 60 per cent between 1998 and 2008, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva.
The new
patent figure for Google comes by way
of the Financial Times (sub req'd), which cites an
annual report by research firm IFI to claim that Google nearly doubled its
patent claim from the previous year when it was only
number 21 on the list with 1,151 new
patents (Apple (s aapl) was 22).
