The Montastraea
annularis patch corals that dominate here are unique to Ambergris Caye's northern lagoon and a rare occurrence in Belize; the only other such patch reefs in the country are located at Glover's Reef.
Dr Kennedy says previous studies have shown that if
Orbicella annularis contains just a small amount of Symbiodinium D it can sometimes respond better to stress events — such as heatwaves — and is more likely to avoid coral bleaching.
On the reef crest, common species are Acropora palmata, P. porites, and Agarcia agaricites overlying dead A. palmata and
M. annularis.
In Barbados, corals remained bleached for 8 months or longer before dying [20], [21]; even a year after temperatures dropped below bleaching thresholds, some corals remained bleached or pale at many sites, particularly within the important reef - builders of the Montastraea
annularis species complex, which are now under consideration for ESA protection [21].
«Our study focused on populations of the Mountain Star coral,
Orbicella annularis, a widespread and prominent reef species in the Caribbean.
John Pandolfi at the University of Queensland, Australia, and Ann Budd at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, analysed physical and genetic changes in both live and fossilised samples of
Montastraea annularis, a coral that has lived in the Caribbean for over 6 million years.
The site consists of approximately 100 Holocene patch reefs and is composed predominantly of boulder corals (Montastraea
annularis).
Montastraea
annularis, or boulder star coral, is one of 66 coral species proposed for protection under the Endangered Species Act by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
