Snarkiness aside, I've written before about the importance of publishers (or broadcasters, or record labels) as filters: how

That being said, publicists and journalists should always keep
in mind that no
publishing house is ever obligated to send
anyone an advance or review copy of a book (although, it is, of course, to our great advantage to send out review copies).
I think that if
anyone were ever going to have any luck
in getting such a study done, it would have to come from the English or business department of a university (preferably both working together) rather than from authors or
publishing houses.
