Except for Grand Moff Tarkin, who was basically a bunch
of Peter Cushing - shaped pixels, none
of the major players were people we knew; most
of them were
characters we'd never heard
of, the grunts and redshirts
of the galactic war, and that meant
anything could happen to them, and that the film didn't have to set aside a certain amount
of space for enacting things we'd heard
about but never seen dramatized.
Although Viola Davis offers a fantastic performance here, this disgusting melodrama is much more concerned
about making you cry than saying
anything meaningful, while most
of the
characters are one - dimensional and several unnecessary details are constantly added to the story with the sole purpose
of cheap sentimentality.
Rarely does so much talking say so little: Even after 30 - plus minutes
of shocking pronouncements and sweeping exposition, no explanation has been offered for why we should care
about any
of these
characters or
anything that happens to them.
I am frustrated by the lack
of modern - or future - set films without strong female
characters, but I'm aware that, historically speaking, women haven't been given much training in warfare or an equal share
of about anything.
As for Johnson's
character, he's a San Diego - based primatologist named Davis Okoye, who seems capable
of doing just
about anything that the movie requires him to do.
If there is
anything I didn't like
about the film, it's Cameron's lack
of realism when dealing with the roles
of children, especially Jonathan Lipnicki's (Stuart Little, The Little Vampire)
character as the boy that Maguire forms a bond with, as he's too unrealistic in demeanor and too strange looking to buy as a real kid, and for that matter the same goes for Tyson Tidwell's (Suarez, The Ladykillers) demeanor (son
of Rod) as well.
But fortunately, the
characters of this world are so lovable you're willing to watch them do just
about anything, even if it doesn't make much sense.
As I've been told again, time after time from anyone and everyone who knows
anything about comic books is that the
characters actually are really deep with intriguing stories and layers
of complexity.
And any time spent thinking
about how ridiculous what they're actually talking
about is, is still more entertaining than some
of the antics the supporting
characters get up to, be it John Malkovich trying to kung fu a robot or a former Special Forces soldier complaining stress or all the running he was having to do, or dear God
anything having to do with Sam's parents who offer nothing to the film but reminders why they shouldn't be in it.
The film doesn't have
anything meaningful to say
about this pattern or the reason it exists for these
characters, save for what a few
of the
characters themselves have to say for those things.
If you've already had your fill
of games
about characters who are seemingly incapable
of stopping whenever common sense dictates, you won't get
anything out
of Wind - Up Knight.
, these quirks are hung on the
character in lieu
of real development; like Steve Carell's obsession with Proust, or Paul Dano's desire to be a pilot, they don't reveal
anything meaningful to us
about these people, it's just lazy writing.
An epigraph before the movie warns us not to take
anything we're
about to see too seriously — probably because, while Hughes was a real figure, the movie compresses various events
of his life and inserts fictional
characters, eventually taking on the cast
of an old, fictional Hollywood narrative closer to Sunset Boulevard than a biopic.
He's a
character who puts in a lot
of effort to make it appear that he doesn't care
about anything.
Now, if you know
anything about NintenDogs, PlayStation Vita Pets will seem quite familiar as you start out by choosing from four different puppies, each with their own personality, sense
of humor, and

We don't really know
anything about their
characters, but the basic setup
of the show is that it's an anthology series where each episode is
about a different person in the present day who believes that they're descended from the Romanoffs, the former Russian royal family who were (supposedly) all killed off by the Bolsheviks in 1918.

of this positivity can be credited to the casting
of Gal Gadot in the title role, a role that she will no doubt be associated with for pretty much the rest
of her career in the same way that Christopher Reeve was with Superman, and that isn't to say either actor is typecast but they just nailed everything
about the
character they portray so much that it is difficult to think
of them as
anything else.
I know it's the reveal day
of the game and I don't know
anything about it, but really, it's another Mario vs DK game and we already have Tipping Stars on the Wii U. And I really hope «Mini Spec» doesn't end up turning another recurring Mario

The
character models
of Top Spin aren't overly detailed, but they are so crisp and so clean that is hard to really say
anything negative

character seems unmotivated by
anything but his macho rivalry with Slater is just
about the only vestige
of Woo's usual themes.
We don't know
anything about the relationship between the Buscemi and Stormare
characters — except that it seems to have begun recently — nor
of the latter's precise connection to Shep Proudfoot.
The idea
of some answers to these mysteries could perhaps be enticing if I cared
about any
of the
characters,
anything about their world, or the film did
anything to ignite an interest in its plot rather than offering up vague teases at answers that never come and do nothing but try to hook the bait in for the next entry.
Built around the notion that
anything outrageous is funny, the makers
of «American Wedding» bank on the idea that easy teen - and college - age audiences won't care
about tediously underwritten
characters, a general lameness
of humor and flaccid attempts at emotional investment (Jim takes Michelle on a romantic walk on the beach) as long as those audiences leave the theater with one or two over-the-top howlers to talk
about.
Paradoxically, while the main group (played by Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard who all do their best at understating as much as possible) feel well - defined and realistic as
characters, the tone
of the film is so distant it's impossible to feel
anything about them.
That's the setup, and while Bell's screenplay doesn't exactly dig into
anything unique or revelatory
about crumbling relationships, there is at least a bit
of honesty to these
characters, despite how broadly drawn they are.
Overall, The Lost Legacy doesn't bring
anything new to the Uncharted series but if you're curious
about what these less - discussed
characters from the franchise get up to when Nathan isn't around and you're happy with more
of the same gameplay and scenery then you'll definitely want to check out Chloe and Nadine's adventure.
Though the main
characters of Clint Eastwood's HEREAFTER have all been profoundly affected by their brushes with the afterlife, the film is
about anything but death.
No news has been released
about Williams»
character, which is expected (we don't know
anything about Thandie Newton, Emilia Clarke, or Phoebe Waller - Bridge «s
characters, either) but also a little frustrating — based on his varied and impressive roles in The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, The Night
Of, and Hap and Leonard, Williams could be playing a Wookie and we wouldn't be surprised.
Plenty
of other female critics, besides me, are flagging the problem, which includes a scarcity
of substantial and complex female
characters in narrative films, whether Hollywood or indie, that fail to pass the Bechdel test (at least one scene with two female
characters who have names, talking to each other
about anything other than a man).
While I don't know
anything about the
character other than the fact that she is a Russian spy, I am pretty sure these images are going to get a lot
of people even more excited
about the movie.
None
of the
characters are particularly likeable, and that situation does not improve — they never redeem themselves and at the end viewers are left wondering if they have learned
anything at all
about themselves through their experiences.
The Macau - born, Hong Kong and American raised actor is our first confirmed new addition to Joss Whedon «s S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot (not counting Clark Gregg, since his Agent Coulson is a known
character), in the role
of Melinda May, and just because that name isn't familiar might not mean we don't know
anything about her.
I'm not saying
anything bad
about their performances, as they were really good, but just starting to get tired
of seeing them play the same
characters over and over.
But one
of the great things
about Sundance is that
anything can surprise you, and not only does Tillman redeem himself here, but this movie seems destined for larger things thanks to its memorable
characters and terrific performances.
The second half
of the film focuses its attention on the whodunit story, but since most
