Perhaps the internet is doing all of the above and more: encouraging and unifying small religious and other movements; further facilitating scientific unification across geographic proximity, if not also creating new scientific theories and concepts; fostering the rise of new forms of spiritual irrationalism such as those discussed in Wendy Kaminer's wild
book, Sleeping with Extra-Terrestrials; focusing the public even more on particular public personas in news, sports and everything else; creating new classes of investors who are willing to

how does fair, unbiased CNN, AKA ACNN (Anderson Cooper News Network) pick and choose stories as noteworthy... a comment is made by a very elderly priest, probably not quoted properly, and is «front page news» on CNN's website... this same man (priest) has written many great
books, done a lot of great charity work in the poorer parts of New York and nothing is ever posted on the website... but something is said incorrectly and its
published... is this fair, is it right, is it unbiased or is the motivation to make an entire Church lokk bad and let the anti-Catholic screwballs have their heyday in hateful posts... I didn't see this wonderful netwrok post
anything about the disgusting, bigoted and hateful attacks, written by the liberal left wing media elites, like Maureen Dowd, against Rep. Paul Ryan and his Catholic faith... it's all acceptable to you liberal HYPOCRITES!
In reading through the guidelines for Letters submissions, I didn't find
anything that indicated self
published books are not allowed to enter, unlike the National
Book Award, which is clear
about this.

books to traditional
publishing, don't waste your time with

But rather than segregating self
published books, what I would rather see is an education of the public to differentiate between the terms vanity
publishing (which I think most folks agree is generally bad and awful and will never lose its stigma), self -
publishing (which often connotes work that has not been properly vetted by people who know how to judge a good product) and indie
publishing, which is a term that those of us who use it are hoping will come to mean quality — work that has been vetted by independent editors and formatted by people who give a damn
about putting out a professional product that rivals
anything put out by New York.

The fundamental problem staring self
published authors in the face is how do I go from a
book that no one knows
anything about, to a best seller?
Anything that is porn doesn't count — we're talking
about writing, not jerking off on a page, which has always had different «marketing» attached to it — and those real
books that have gained a mainstream audience have done so specifically because they were eventually traditionally
published, i.e. pulled out of the self -
publishing slush pile.

book on why I'm not qualified to
publish any
book since I don't consider myself to be an expert on
anything, and how it's better for me to just read more
about the topics that I am familiar with and the ones that I'm not.

And whatever type of publisher you
publish your
book with, you need to read and understand your contract very carefully before you sign — if you don't have a literary agent to represent you, get a lawyer to look at the contract if you have questions

publishing venture!).
This came
about because at roughly the same time I decided not to self -
publish anything new for a few months so as not to conflict with the release of Immortal at the Edge of the World, Amazon decided to announce they were allowing preorders for all of their Kindle Direct
Publishing books.
As it is today, the
book industry gives short shrift to just
about anything self -
published, condemning vast swaths of important new
books to remain unknown and undistributed, and fall through the cracks.
At launch there were
about 5000 selections available but that amount has vastly increased over the past few weeks and will continue to grow — self -
published authors can submit
anything from a single
book to an entire catalogue.
So I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of times those
publishing houses are buying the rights to
books cheaply, knowing they won't do
anything with the
book, just to avoid those
books being flooded into the market and distracting people's attention away from the few
books that they truly do care
about?
I was hopping to use the Kickstarter for self -
publishing but I don't know
anything about calculating the cost of the printing
books.
Every time you post on Facebook or Twitter, every time someone visits your website, every time you send an e-mail message, every time you write an article
about anything related to
publishing — every time any of those things happen, you're marketing yourself and your
books.
(Hint: there's a whole self - pubber subculture out there who are fanatically dedicated to the proposition that the traditional
publishing industry is either doooooooooomed (like unto the dinosaurs) or a toxic, abusive cartel who refuse to sleep with them buy their
books but want to take on authors and pimp them out like cheap streetwalkers exploit them — the doublethink is as spectacular as
anything you see from the MRA loons, and
about as closely connected to reality.)
In addition to criticisms of the quality of e-
books being self
published, meanwhile, there have also been complaints
about an increase in e-book «spam» in the Amazon Kindle store, including
books that are clearly just cobbled together from bits and pieces of public domain titles or even copyrighted works (Reuters reported recently that there are DVD instruction manuals that tell users how to write and
publish dozens of e-
books a day without having to write
anything).
Dear Writers, you can write
about anything related to authors, writing or
publishing, or any other write - up which can be a resource for authors and
book writers.
And essentially, that first
book, I wrote it, and then I started to learn
about the
publishing industry, discovered how long it would take to get a
book deal, decided I was not interested in waiting, or asking permission to do
anything; I started to learn
about self -
publishing, started blogging, and that kind of started me on the journey of writing.

Each
book you
publish will probably do a little better, because you'll be learning and improving all the time, and growing your author platform (unless you're one of those writers who is completely ignoring your author platform, not learning
anything about marketing, and just hoping to get lucky).

It may not have quite the same resonance as William Goldman's infamous line

anything» — but Carolyn Reidy's comment, made at a recent
Book Industry Study Group meeting held in New York, that «the more we know, the more we have to learn» is an excellent reminder that, as the redoubtable chief executive of Simon & Schuster Inc also noted,

After I arrived at that goal, 10,000 kept showing up in
anything I read
about self -
published authors and the number of
books needed to be sold to make a living at being a writer.
It's
about persuading readers that the quality of our
book is up to the standard of
anything they can get from any
publishing house from anywhere around the world.
As I once told a library audience when presenting

publishing, there are people who will react to a self -
published book as if someone in the room just farted but they're too polite to say
