This morning in Chicago hundreds of primarily Republican state legislators are getting more indoctrination against doing
anything about climate change from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

On December 12 of last year, the Economist's on - line blog said: «A hundred years
from now, looking back, the only question that will appear important
about the historical moment in which we now live is the question of whether or not we did
anything to arrest
climate change.»
To quote Elizabeth Economy
from last August, «Whether we're talking
about food and product safety, or environmental implementation of
anything China might agree to when it comes to global
climate change, or trade and investment barriers and intellectual property rights protection, all of them hinge on China having an effective rule of law.
If I attempt to put myself in the position of a robot
from Mars who doesn't know
anything about the
climate change debate except that it seems important to humans, I don't believe I could conclude that anyone was «taken to the cleaners» in this exchange (assuming a robot
from Mars knows what that expression means:) I think I'd have to conclude that both participants were framing the issue in different ways and so there wasn't a meeting of minds, nor any
change of the needle by either one on the attitudes of the other, nor likely much to help inform locals who were just as mystified by the debate as I was.
The reasons for that are many: the timid language of scientific probabilities, which the climatologist James Hansen once called «scientific reticence» in a paper chastising scientists for editing their own observations so conscientiously that they failed to communicate how dire the threat really was; the fact that the country is dominated by a group of technocrats who believe any problem can be solved and an opposing culture that doesn't even see warming as a problem worth addressing; the way that
climate denialism has made scientists even more cautious in offering speculative warnings; the simple speed of
change and, also, its slowness, such that we are only seeing effects now of warming
from decades past; our uncertainty
about uncertainty, which the
climate writer Naomi Oreskes in particular has suggested stops us
from preparing as though
anything worse than a median outcome were even possible; the way we assume
climate change will hit hardest elsewhere, not everywhere; the smallness (two degrees) and largeness (1.8 trillion tons) and abstractness (400 parts per million) of the numbers; the discomfort of considering a problem that is very difficult, if not impossible, to solve; the altogether incomprehensible scale of that problem, which amounts to the prospect of our own annihilation; simple fear.
But if the disposition to engage in higher quality, reflective reasoning doesn't immunize people
from motivated reasoning, then one can't infer
anything about disputes like
climate change from studies that correlate the disposition to engage in higher quality, reflective reasoning with ideology.
That's why I thought it was incorrect to infer
anything about a
climate change, much less what forced it,
from a regional drought that was less than a decade.
If you ever had even an inkling that The Pickens Plan was far more
about pushing technologies that would profit T. Boone as much if not more than benefit the United States as whole, let alone actually do
anything about climate change, it's high time you read a new piece
from Yale e360.
Many of Ethiopia's most successful and famous athletes come
from (and still live in) this region, but if
climate change has
anything to say
about that, that won't be the case for long.
