about anything that came after; plus two British indies: Emily Lloyd as a cheeky 16 - year - old in David Leland's delightful
comedy - drama «Wish You Were Here»; and one of the great cult films of the decade, Bruce Robinson's savagely witty «Withnail and I» with Richard E. Grant and Paul McCann.
By this time, of course, no one cares any more as even this reporter (and I'm sure the readers themselves) has grown tired of trying to find something —
ANYTHING — even remotely interesting to continue writing
about Baywatch, which makes «Snatched» seem like «Citizen Kane» and any Adam Sandler
comedy look lucid, coherent and intelligent by comparison.
Amy Schumer is way too smart to be attached to a movie as clunky and backward - looking as «I Feel Pretty,» a flat
comedy which attempts to take on beauty standards and issues of body positivity but can't think of
anything fresh to say
about either.
«Safety Not Guaranteed» is an amalgamation of everything that's great
about independent filmmaking — from its hugely original script to its wonderful cast of characters — but the one thing that it does better than
anything else is create a cinematic experience that's rich in both
comedy and emotion.
Simply put, it's supposed to be a
comedy, but there really isn't
anything funny
about it — except the fact that, after all the expense and time New Line spent on the film, it's likely to be forgotten by moviegoers within a month.
