The researchers found that
applying a strong magnetic field to these ultracold atoms caused them to line up in an alternating pattern and lean away from each other.
The team extended the life of the spins 50 times by
applying a strong magnetic field, some 25 times the strength of those used in previous experiments, to align the spins, along with lowering the temperature.
When the researchers
applied a strong magnetic field to the atoms, they saw something curious.

The trick was performed using a
strong magnetic field that distorts the movement of electrons in water molecules, which in turn produces a
magnetic field opposing the one
applied.
If you then
apply a
strong vertical
magnetic field, the flowing electrons will experience a sideways shove that will cause them to crowd to the side of the bar as they go so that a voltage develops across the width of the bar too.
However, when bismuth ferrite is placed in a
strong magnetic field (greater than a certain critical value), the structure is destroyed and this is accompanied by the emergence of a linear ME effect (when polarization is linearly proportional to the
applied field).
In the process, a
strong magnetic field is
applied to food to magnetize the metal fragments inside, and subsequently, these metals, if they are contained in the food, can be detected by sensing their
magnetic fields using SQUID sensors.
One application is
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) where one would aim to
apply even
stronger magnetic fields to achieve sharper images and faster data acquisition.
In the single - atom qubit used by Morello's team, and which Tosi's new design
applies, a silicon chip is covered with a layer of insulating silicon oxide, on top of which rests a pattern of metallic electrodes that operate at temperatures near absolute zero and in the presence of a very
strong magnetic field.
In order to study abnormalities in electron state changes, the scientists
applied a
strong vertical
magnetic field and then bombarded the system with microwave photons.
