A few years back, states across the country started to enact what have become known as «Move Over Laws,» requiring motorists who are approaching stationary emergency vehicles on the highway to move over at least one lane in order to prevent an accident.

This new Maryland law requires drivers approaching from the rear of an emergency vehicle using visual signals while stopped on a highway to, if possible, «move over» one or more lanes.

While every driver is obligated to yield the right of way to first responders, emergency vehicle drivers must use sirens and lights to alert other motorists that they are approaching.

When approaching a law enforcement or other authorized emergency vehicle parked on a two - lane roadway with their emergency lights activated, and except when otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer, drivers will be required to slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour or greater; or travel at 5 miles per hour when the posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less.

When driving on interstate highways or other highways with two or more lanes traveling in the direction of the emergency vehicle, and except when otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer, drivers approaching a law enforcement or other authorized emergency vehicle parked on a roadway with their emergency lights activated, will be required to leave the lane closest to the emergency vehicle, as soon as it is safe to do so.

If you are in an intersection when a emergency vehicle is approaching safely go through the intersection and then pull over to the right and stop your vehicle.

When being approached by an emergency vehicle using audible and visual signals (lights and / or sirens), law requires motorists to immediately pull to the right side of the road and allow the emergency vehicle to pass.

Stay vigilant, prepared, and always remember to pull to the right when emergency vehicles approach.
