Small works such as Zero (2014) begin with a black or white
aquacryl ground with eddies of words describing senses and memories of the artist, connecting with two wall - based sculptures, Allegory of Sight and Allegory of Sound, which strive to evoke synaesthesia in the viewer.
These meticulous pencil traces create a second surface layer, contrasting with the
solid aquacryl background.

Houshiary achieves these dense matte surfaces of either white or black with an even application
of Aquacryl, a concentrated, viscous suspension of rich pigment that dries to a uniformly flat finish with a barely perceptible incidence of randomly distributed pores.
The works with which she feels most connected are inevitably her paintings, which comprise delicate, meticulous pencil work on a more
robust aquacryl.

Proceeding from the binary starting point of a black or white
aquacryl ground, these paintings possess a numinous quality, their teeming eddies of words being inscribed with precision yet feeling as though they arrived pre-formed — as organic as language, as effortless and essential as breath.
