To investigate the antiquity of foxes on the Channel Islands and improve radiocarbon chronologies, we obtained three new AMS radiocarbon dates of island fox bones from the potentially
earliest archaeological contexts to complement previously published AMS dates.
Previous genetic research of modern island foxes and chronological and distribution analysis of island fox remains from paleontological and
archaeological contexts posed different hypotheses about fox origins on the Channel Islands [14 — 22].
Compared with other skulls hailing from the same time period, which were dated poorly or lacked a
clear archaeological context, this skull was properly dated — ranging back to 400,000 years.
Missing piece To build its collection in the 19th century, the British Museum gathered crates of clay tablets by methods that would not be considered scientifically sound today; namely, buying artifacts that had been dug up around Babylon and Uruk without
