The visit successfully provided the Commission with a broad range of information on Finnish
arctic research and, at the same time, provided Finnish colleagues with an opportunity to speak to U.S. leaders on
Arctic research policy and to share strategies and goals.
At the request of John Calder, head of the
Arctic Research Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and through the Cooperative Institute for
Arctic Research (CIFAR) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, ARCUS developed this short informational brochure to introduce the SEARCH program, a major new interagency
arctic research effort, to a general audience.

As part of the Canadian contribution to the International Polar Year (IPY), several major international
research programs have focused on offshore
arctic marine ecosystems.
Describing new species and their ecological roles, quantifying carbon and energy fluxes in the ecosystem, documenting the annual cycle of ecological processes, identifying hotspots of biological production, and contrasting the ecology of the different
arctic seas are the objectives shared by several international and multidisciplinary
research efforts that contributed to the Canadian IPY program.
I first became interested in this when
researching the massive
arctic warming before the last one (the last one being 1920 - 1949 and the one before that 1819 to 1850.)
