The area around a black hole was thought to be too violent to form stars, since intense gravitational forces there could rip apart gas clouds in which stars are born.

A
black hole arises when the warping
around a point grows so severe that that spacetime in the
area becomes like a funnel so steep that nothing can climb back out, as may happen when a massive star collapses.
The team imaged the
area around the supermassive
black hole in M77 and resolved a compact gaseous structure with a radius of 20 light - years.
MATISSE will contribute to several fundamental research
areas in astronomy, focusing in particular on the inner regions of discs
around young stars where planets are forming, the study of stars at different stages of their lives, and the surroundings of supermassive
black holes at the centres of galaxies.
Astronomers anticipate exciting new
areas of science to open up after using Webb to study stars at the beginning and end of their «lifecycle,» as well as stars» behavior

«This newly discovered analogy has the potential to be a significant step forward in our understanding of turbulent flows in free - surface vortices and to provide insights into diverse
areas of study ranging from civil engineering hydraulic structures to weather systems in the atmosphere and even extending to the details of how galaxies rotate
around the
black holes at their centres,» Dr Richard Sherlock, a lecturer in Physics at IT Sligo, said.
It turned out that the observed width of the jet was significantly wider than what was expected in the currently favoured models where the jet is launched from the
black hole's ergosphere — an
area of space right next to a spinning
black hole where space itself is dragged to a circling motion
around the
hole», explains Professor Gabriele Giovannini from Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, the lead author of the paper published in Nature Astronomy yesterday.
