Because all of Scripture is culturally directed — i. e., because all of it was written for a particular situation and out of a particular context - the evangelical can not use the
issue of culture to distinguish between
arguments for women's place
in marriage and her place
in the church.
As
in some
marriages, the
argument isn't always about the topic at hand but rather about a deep seated anger over some other
issue.
But what I detect
in it is the work of someone who was never all that interested
in investigating the
arguments on either side of the same - sex
marriage debate; whose scant interest
in it has now been fully exhausted, both intellectually and morally; and whose present conclusions hover
in mid-air without anything to support them other than a wistful regret that he has lost a hoedown partner
in a gay man who has come fairly unglued over the
issue.
The emails Cuomo sent yesterday give a very early clue to an
argument he would likely make if he indeed decides to take a step onto the national stage: Under my leadership, New York led the nation on touchstone progressive
issues, not only becoming the largest state
in the country (before the US Supreme Court Prop. 8 decision) to legalize gay
marriage, but also the first to act on gun control
in the wake of the horrific Newtown massacre.
State Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long (pictured) said the executive committee wanted lawmakers to know, despite the
arguments to the contrary by some, that it is serious on the
issue: «The party has made it very clear that traditional
marriage is a line
in the sand and a very important
issue,» Long said.
The Appeal Court seems to have set out a pretty clear
argument that the treatment of common - law partners is discriminatory
in comparison to
marriages or civil unions, but I wonder if this
issue would be better left to couples to decide, as Quebec's legislative assembly originally desired.
When couples disagree about finances, cracks
in the
marriage begin to show,
arguments ensue, and rifts are created, all on account of
issues that could have been avoided if couples simply talked to each other about money — preferably before, not after, exchanging vows.
After all these years of working with couples, I now understand that the heart of the matter, the central
issue in the
marriage, rarely concerns the content of a couple's
arguments, but almost always concerns the strength and responsiveness of the attachment relationship they have.
Some of the main
arguments that have people doubting the viability of
marriage have to do with broad
issues like longer life expectancy, people marrying beyond a broader geographic region than they did
in the past, and of course the question about whether monogamy is really compatible with human nature.
