There is clear evidence that the supply of mineral dust to the tropical western Atlantic region has been controlled by environmental conditions in the Saharan region during the 20th century (21) with increases in dust supply linked to increased

According to the study,
since 1984 heightened temperatures and resulting
aridity have caused fires to spread across an additional 16,000 square miles than they otherwise would have — an area larger than the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut combined.
Climate's role in increasing such
aridity has grown
since 2000, the researchers say, and will continue to do so.
Rainfall change and variability is very likely to affect vegetation in tropical grassland and savanna systems with, for example, a reduction in cover and productivity simulated along an
aridity gradient in southern African savanna in response to the observed drying trend of about 8 mm / yr
since 1970 (Woodward and Lomas, 2004a).
