It is well known that full array local dimming (FALD) backlight systems produce better black levels — and therefore better contrast — as well as higher peak brightness, all while minimizing cloudiness and halos
around bright objects on dark backgrounds.
It can't achieve perfect black the way an OLED can, and in pitch - black home theater rooms, you can see some blooming from the edges and some halos
around bright objects.
In comparison, the Rift has a more general aura
around the bright objects.
That should help it address one of the few weaknesses of the 2017 model we tested, which revealed some haloing

It's so easy to be distracted by all the BSO's (
Bright Shiny
Objects)
around the interwebs today.
Mostly his paintings, but also the
bright walls, his magnificent collection of tribal
objects from
around the world, the grand piano and other musical instruments given centre stage, stacks of musical scores, art books and catalogues.
Other full array local dimming systems suffer from a «halo» effect
around moving
bright objects because their local dimming fields lack sufficient brightness control or are either entirely on or off.
You occasionally see clouds of extra light
around very
bright objects and some settings cause striping in HDR colours, but it's still an excellent curved option.
Plus it avoids the sort of bands or halos of light «clouding»
around stand - out
bright objects that all LCD TVs suffer with to some extent when playing HDR content.
In fact, dark scenes in some ways look better than they do in Sony's HDR upgrade mode, since there's no hint of the slight «blooming» of light
around stand - out
bright objects that occasionally materialises with the HDR «upgrading» processing active.
Even Sony's much - improved Slim Backlight System +, meanwhile, can't prevent you sometimes seeing pretty clear blooms of accidental light

bright colors are better for accents like pillows or lamp bases or small
objects that can be moved out or changed
around or replaced.
