stitches around the cervix to help prevent it from shortening and opening too early, causing preterm birth.
In order to do this, your healthcare provider will sweep his or
finger around your cervix, gently detaching your amniotic sac from your uterine wall.
A cervical pessary is a plastic device that can be
placed around the cervix in order to keep it closed and «long» in the hope that it will prevent preterm delivery.
For the conventional «Pap» smear test, cells are scraped
from around the cervix — the neck of the womb — and «smeared» on to a slide.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) usually haunt the nether regions, whether germs have set up shop in the urethra,
clustered around the cervix, or burrowed inside a cell.
«The results suggested that women who received the thicker thread had increased
inflammation around the cervix,» said co-author David MacIntyre, a lecturer in reproductive systems medicine at Imperial College London.
Crucially, the team also found women who received the thicker thread had more potentially harmful bacteria in the vagina and
around the cervix.
Dr David MacIntyre, scientific lead of the study, also from the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial explained: «At the beginning of the trial, all women had similar types of naturally - occurring bacteria, called Lactobacillus, in their birth canal and
around their cervix.
«Crucially, we also found that women who received the thicker thread had more potentially harmful bacteria in the vagina and
around the cervix.»
