The partnership's research builds on educator Howard Gardner's seminal theory
of multiple intelligences to indicate that
arts education — including the visual
arts, dance, music, and drama — enhances a
student's ability to acquire core academic skills.
Along with integration
of the
arts and sensitivity to each
student's development, relationships are considered crucial to success in Waldorf
education philosophy.
But Waldorf methods, in sharp contrast to traditional public
education, encourage a learning pace dictated by the
students themselves and an integration
of the
arts into lessons.
In 2001, the California Board
of Education set standards at each grade level for what
students should know and be able to do in music, visual
arts, theater, and dance, but a statewide study in 2006, by SRI International, found that 89 percent
of K - 12 schools failed to offer a standards - based course
of study in all four disciplines.
What
students do in
arts - integrated
education is actually far closer to the practice
of contemporary artists than what usually happens in regular
arts classrooms.
While many find the value
of arts education to be the ways in which it impacts
student learning, I feel the learning
of art is itself a worthwhile endeavor.
