Founded in 1977 in Pittsburgh, PA, and starting as a quirky, anything goes
food co-op and artist studio
space, the museum created a program of artist residencies in 1982 to focus on site - specific installation
art.
I stopped by the de Groot show on my way to Smack Mellon, the nonprofit
art space in DUMBO, where Tin Nyo is included in FOODshed, a large group show curated by Amy Lipton (described in its tagline as «An exhibition of upstate / downstate NY artists who work with
food and agriculture»), and where she invited me to share some sour cherry pie.
Known for building sprawling assemblage environments that mimic counterculture settings — most famously an entire ramshackle meth lab — the
art duo has made a splash at Unlimited with their newest installation, a warren of dusty waiting rooms, Asian fast -
food stands (selling cameras made out of rice), and other psychedelic
spaces that encircle a printing press for a fictional anarchist culture «zine called Artichoke Underground.
Grynsztejn says: «We are thrilled to bring together this world - class artistic team for a new concept that interweaves
art,
food, design, and learning throughout the MCA's public
spaces.
Gates's construction also serves as a contemplative
space meant to inspire dialogue across philosophical and cultural boundaries on topics ranging from politics and religion to culture,
food, and
art as well as a performative
space for the Black Monks of Mississippi, a group of Baptist - Buddhist musicians who mix slave spirituals, monastic chants, and jazz to create a singular sonorous experience.
On the ground floor of this
art space, there is more
food for thought as it features an active restaurant and bar named Bar & Kitchen where Trayte is also exhibiting a whimsical range of limited edition, semi-functional ceramics with custom - made display cases.
The quirky exhibition
space is strategically sited, as the gallery is at a very short distance from one of Berlin's most populous
art hubs, where Supportico Lopez, Blain Southern, Thomas Fischer, Arratia Beer, Guido W. Baudech, Tanya Leighton, and the small project
space Insitu are all based, spending their free time sharing schnitzels at the local German -
food standby Joseph Roth Diele.
