Emergency Medical Services personnel use a simple, rapid means of determining the severity of stroke known as the RACE (Rapid
Arterial Occlusion Evaluation) Scale.
Three of the patients did not complete chemotherapy — one died after consent but prior to chemotherapy; one died during chemotherapy because of
an arterial occlusion; and one had a myocardial infarction prior to completion of the four courses of chemotherapy.
Reh envisions this approach could be useful for treatment of acute eye injuries and central retinal
arterial occlusion — a stroke of the eye.
