Artist Writes is a series of commissioned essays and public
lectures by contemporary
artists who write: A.L. Steiner, Andrea Fraser, Martine Syms, and William Pope.L.
They are currently exhibiting the work of Lawrence Abu Hamdan (Jordanian
artist who lives and works in Beirut): «Lawrence Abu Hamdan is an
artist and «private ear» whose projects have taken the form of installations, performances, photography, essays,
lectures, videos and graphic works.
And his fans included prominent cultural minds, like Peggy Guggenheim and Clement Greenberg,
who attended
lectures by Hofmann and championed his efforts as both an
artist and a teacher.
Among his favorite memories of working at the place was crossing Telegraph Avenue with
artist Raymond Pettibon, whose «entire honorarium fell out of his pocket, and he didn't even seem to care»; Kiki Smith telling the board of trustees, in a
lecture, to draw the «insides of their bodies»; and dancing at a reception with Phyllis Wattis,
who asked, «Don't they have the «White Album»?»
The Elson
Lecture Series features distinguished contemporary
artists who are represented in the Gallery's permanent collection.
Visitors
who attend the book signing and reception will have the opportunity to meet the
artists and share their thoughts on the
lecture experience.
Robert Iglehart, Hale Woodruff and Tony Smith
who were teachers in the New York University School of Art Education, in the fall of 1949 privately took over the loft which previously housed «Subjects of the
Artist,» «Studio 35» provided the forum for Friday evening
lectures by advanced
artists.
