These items still take
skill and
artistic flair to create, and part of the appeal of Folksy to me was the sheer variety of goods on offer and the way that many different types of creativity could be found under the same roof, this
seems to no longer be the case and I'm concerned about the further changes to come.
Intuitive pairings of works from a diverse range of artists, whose careers and lives span multiple generations, places,
skills and training and practices both decontextualize and recontextualize our understanding of art and
artistic practice, making connections where none
seemed to exist and breaking with conventions that have historically limited dialogue.
Practicing my
skill under the warming glow of
artistic praise and economic encouragement (my work began to sell well even then) made me
seem «interesting» though still «odd» to my mother and the rest of the family.
I have a few friends that
seem to have mastered the
skill, or were born with the
artistic talent for compiling items in such a pleasing way that you want to study what they've accomplished.
