Academy voters who are already fans.
Easily the best list of Best Picture candidates the
Academy has compiled in years, though we say that
as if the blame for the dismal crops of years past falls in the laps of the
voters and not that of the studios that make the movies in the first place.
For that matter, if
academy voters took international cinema seriously, they might have spared a thought for Beya, a Congolese woman who had never acted on - screen before giving her mesmerizing performance in «Félicité» (shortlisted
as Senegal's entry for the foreign - language film Oscar).

as the films roll out (or worse, even before they roll out), we find ourselves treating their fortunes
as sport, pitting them against each other, judging their long - term prospects with critics and
academy voters, and effectively dividing them into winners or losers.
The film doesn't appear to be the easiest of sells — but then again, the last three years have been kind to downbeat, female - led Sundance hits,
as «Winter's Bone,» «Precious» and «Frozen River» were all embraced by critics and
Academy voters alike.

as admired
as Zimmer, who is on his 11th nomination, or Williams, on his 46th -LRB-!!).
None of these flaws, however, is likely to matter with
Academy voters,
as The Hours looks and sounds too much like a prototypical Best Picture contender to resist.
Only 15 % of participants who identified
as Republican
voters said they felt the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had made the right choice for the annual awards ceremony's top prize.
The next year, David Fincher's «The Social Network» had an even more impressive, and nearly unanimous, run through the critics» awards — and while that may have helped establish it
as the alternative to «The King's Speech,» it wasn't enough to persuade
Academy and guild
voters to forsake that crowd - pleaser for something chillier, more artful and more appealing to critics.
His work in «Call Me By Your Name» put him front and center in the attention of
Academy voters,
as well
as the public.
Harvey Weinstein has never been one to put much faith in the length of
Academy voters» memories, so
as usual, he's favoring a late - year release plan for his presumed awards contenders — the prospects of which I was discussing only the other day.

as the neurotic friend in Mike Leigh's Another Year, could have been nominated in either actress category but was omitted from both, a probable case of underexposure with the
Academy's Californian
voters.
Though the N.B.R. Awards Gala tends to diverge from the Oscars when it comes to winners, perhaps Gerwig will be making a similar speech on a much bigger stage just a couple months from now — provided
Academy voters love Lady Bird
as much
as every industry gala does.
Carell's flashy, ostentatious performance is just the sort of thing
Academy voters fawn over, and while his positioning in the lead category isn't
as patently insane
as Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, it's still a clear supporting role that ended up pushing out actors like Ralph Fiennes and David Oyelowo, both of whom were the actual leads of their respective films.
