CIV) causes a respiratory infection in dogs that looks like «kennel cough,» also known

Dog Flu, also referred to
as Canine Influenza or
CIV, is highly contagious and rapidly spread by a combination of aerosols, droplets, and direct contact with respiratory secretions or contaminated fomites.
The pathogen behind these infections was eventually identified
as a strain of
CIV previously found in Asia, possibly carried to the U.S. via air travel by pet or rescue dogs.
Clinical suspicion of
CIV can not be used
as a substitute for appropriate laboratory testing.
Typically, CIRD is treated with supportive care and antibiotics when appropriate.6 According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), dogs that are frequently in social situations with other dogs — such

As you may know,
CIV is highly contagious.2 Direct contact and droplets from sneezing or coughing spread
CIV directly from dog to dog.
The
CIV vaccination is a «lifestyle» vaccination, recommended for dogs at risk of exposure due to exposure to other dogs — such
as boarding, dog shows, training classes and visiting dog parks.
The disease can also contaminate bowls, leashes, collars, and the hands and clothing of people who handle ill dogs, so just
as with human influenza, frequent hand washing and disinfection may help in preventing the spread of
CIV.
In the severe form of
CIV, the animal will develop high fevers (104ºF to 106ºF) and have signs of pneumonia, such
as increased respiratory rates and effort.

CIV (Canine Influenza) vaccination
as well.
As of February 2018, there are over 400 confirmed cases of H3N2
CIV and an increasing number of suspect cases included in this outbreak.
Just
as Crawford suggested asking people surrendering dogs who might have been exposed to
CIV to keep them for a couple of weeks, many shelters now ask people bringing in or calling about orphaned kittens to do the same until they're old enough to be adopted.

While in the past
CIV infections in and of themselves have not shown a significant mortality rate,
CIV infections
as well
as other respiratory viruses compromise the normal defenses of the lung permitting secondary bacterial pneumonias.
Dogs showing clinical signs for > 7 days should be tested for
CIV by an antibody test
as the virus itself is often undetectable in later stages of illness,
as is true for most respiratory viral infections.
