It could be an infection (such
as Ehrlichia in dogs), it could be a recent vaccination or even a tumor.
The diagnosis is further complicated by the fact that dogs infected with Babesia may also be infected with other diseases carried by ticks, such
as Ehrlichia, Lyme disease, or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
The culprit is a bacterium known
as Ehrlichia ewingii, which so far was thought to infect only dogs.
Not exact matches
Both had also recently been bitten by ticks, but tests for the usual tick - borne suspects — such
as several
Ehrlichia species, a group of intracellular bacteria — came back negative.
Heartwater, a tick - borne disease of domestic and wild ruminants, is caused by the intracellular rickettsia
Ehrlichia ruminantium (previously known
as Cowdria ruminantium).
And this test is amazing because it determines exposure to
Ehrlichia canis or
Ehrlichia ewingii and Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma platys
as well
as Lyme disease — not all tick diseases but important ones.
Additionally, be sure to also check the greyhound for
Ehrlichia,
as some greyhounds have both diseases together.
So if there is any doubt
as to whether the WBC / platelet counts are normal, an
Ehrlichia titer is always in order.
Infectious diseases such
as viral non-Canine Distemper, Canine Distemper, Bacterial Rickettsial (
Ehrlichia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever)
Fleas and ticks can carry such diseases
as Lyme disease,
ehrlichia, rocky mountain spotted fever and tick paralysis.

A positive «+» antibody test
as used in Idexx «4DX» test detects the presence of antibodies to the organism
Ehrlichia canis and is consistent with your dog having been successfully transmitted one or more of the different
Ehrlichia bacterial organisms from a protracted tick attachment.

As part of your pet's annual examination, we recommend a heartworm / lyme /
ehrlichia / anaplamsa combination test.

Ehrlichia can cause the following symptoms in dogs: fever, lethargy, loss of appetitie, weight loss, abnormal bleeding such
as nosebleeds or bruising, enlarged lymph nodes, enlarged spleen, pain and stiffness, coughing, discharge from the eyes or nose, vomiting and diarrhea, inflammation of the eye, and neurological symptoms such
as incoordination, depression, and paralysis.
Ticks work in the same way and can spread diseases such
as Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis,
Ehrlichia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Babesiosis.
