A comprehensive study conducted by Vetmeduni Vienna, BOKU and ZAMG has now shown that the usual
cooling systems, such
as earth - air heat exchangers or direct and indirect
evaporative cooling, some of which have been established practice since the 1960s, are good choices for
cooling livestock buildings.
In fact, it is the TOA energy balance which takes primacy in many climate change discussions (there are some exceptions, such
as if you could introduce a moist surface in the Sahara desert, the
evaporative cooling would likely be more important regionally than CO2 increase).
Where do they account for the
evaporative cooling in the interacting layer that cancels out the heating in the skin layer so
as to prevent any reduction of the natural upward energy fllux?
The liquid condensed at the bottom evaporates creating local
cooling and rises; the way ocean water and all water does from the surface
as an enormous pool of
evaporative phase change refrigerant for the surface (and the atmospheric bath of nitrogen / oxygen).
Vegetation is usually the best shade, because it is later arriving in the spring, when we need more solar gain, and usually provides shade into fall,
as well
as proving its own
evaporative cooling effect.
These errors were the combined result of the predip temperature of the canvas bucket,
evaporative cooling of the partially filled canvas bucket after leaving the sea, temperature change of the thermometer if withdrawn for reading, and several unsystematic errors, such
as occasional 5 or 10 degrees misreadings.
The issue
as I see it is whether the
evaporative cooling in the interacting layer is strong enough to negate the effect of the warming in the skin so
as to cancel out any effect on the upward background energy flow from the subskin.
This is the same
as Configuration 1 except that SunTuf corrugated polycarbonate glazing has bee added over the absorber to see if the glazing improved efficiency by reducing absorber heat loss and reducing
evaporative cooling from the open water channels.
So when an
evaporative air
cooler evaporates one litre of water it
cools a room by about the same amount
as running a simple 1kW heater would warm the room in three quarters of an hour.
(In the full 4 - dimensional climate, in some places and times and weather conditions, there will be sensible heat transfer toward the surface; there can be latent heat transfer to the surface
as well (frost / dew); some places will have
evaporative surface
cooling with sensible surface heating (cold dry air blowing over warm water or a warm moist surface).
As the wet bulb temperature is effectively the lowest possible temperature that
evaporative cooling can reach I would guess that the
evaporative cooling effect of trees would have no impact on wet bulb temperature (but simply cash in some of the maximum possible
evaporative cooling potential).
The large windows and doorways capture daylight
as well
as help with ventilation and
evaporative cooling.
To use this same system for
cooling, the north side of the Solar Shed roof is set up
as a
evaporative / radiation
cooling surface.
This leaves only the surface
evaporative cooling, which is balanced by global precipitation,
as the term to accommodate such an increase.
As it's based on the
evaporative cooling technique, it produces a soft chilling process which seems natural.
