When the dog became a symbol of the rebellion, the breed became known
as the Keeshond — literally, Kees» Dog.
In fact, the American Eskimo dog descended from one of the varieties of spitz developed in Germany, with influences from other spitz breeds such
as the keeshond, Pomeranian, and Volpino Italiano.
For most of my life, I had Wolfspitz dogs, better known
as Keeshond (kayz - hund) after the pet belonging to a rebel against the Dutch House of Orange nicknamed Kees.

It is thought that such dogs
as the Schipperke,
Keeshond, American Eskimo and German Spitz may have been used in breeding programs to obtain the smaller dogs we know today.

Keeshond as Golden Retriever, Akita, and Samoyed.
They share the same ancestry
as other arctic breeds such
as the Samoyed and
Keeshond.
The
Keeshond is known
as «The Smiling Dutchman» and «The Gentleman of Holland» for a very good reason: his temperament.
Because of their gentle personalities,
Keeshonds are sometimes used
as comfort dogs, therapy dogs and dogs for depression or anxiety.
The lively little
Keeshond (pronounced «kays - hawnd»), also sometimes known
as the Wolfspitz, Foxdog, Chien Loup, Dutch
Keeshond, Dutch Barge Dog, Smiling Dutchman or Laughing Dutchman, is a very old breed and one of a very few that was only bred to be a watchdog, guard dog and family companion.
