I do not recommend uploading the Word doc for publication, but using an HTM or mobi file created by
KindleGen — you can do this by saving the word file to HTM, and then zipping both the HTM page and the images folder created (
as a ZIP) file and uploading that.
Even if you export
as an ePub3, and then run the file through
KindleGen, it will still convert the files to jpegs; but it might have problems doing it.
The
KindleGen compiler will spit out a lot of information, but
as long
as the last line says MOBI File successfully generated!
That meant that instead of 1280 px wide, I might
as well format my own images at 1000px wide (because
KindleGen rules: it WILL process the images whether I like it or not — nothing gets on the Kindle store unless it's gone through a
KindleGen processing), and control the quality at the same time.
KindleGen is also built - in to the Kindle Previewer application and that serves
as a GUI over
KindleGen.
Once the file is converted by the
KindleGen, the same should be dragged and dropped into the Previewer to preview and ensure if the format is done well,
as required.
This means the
KindleGen file is 3 times
as big
as it was in version 1.

EPUB file
as a finished product is not the real product per se; it needs to be compiled by
KindleGen to be ultimately readable on any Kindle eReading device.
