Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), who was saved from shipwreck
as a boy by the equally young Elizabeth Swann (Kiera Knightley) whom he's been pining for ever after, enlists the help of renegade
pirate Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) when Miss Swann is abducted by cursed
pirates led by the particularly wicked
Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) with whom Sparrow of course has a score to settle.
While almost none of the movie makes an awful lot of sense in the logic department, the action is great fun and nearly non-stop, all the while giving us an army of scenery - chewing performances from the likes of Depp and Geoffrey Rush (who makes just a perfect «evil»
pirate captain,
as opposed to Depp's «good»
pirate captain).
The versatile Johnny Depp seems to be having a great time in his role
as a
pirate, and his performance
as the slightly off - kilter
captain puts a sparkle in just about every scene that he's in.

One of the most beloved thespians out there, Nighy is equally at home
as Captain Jack's nemesis in the
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films or
as a dead body talking to a pigeon in short film, THE HUNGRY CORPSE.
There's certainly a lot of fun action sequences
as you'd expect, and despite the lack of Basil Rathbone, this film's significantly more fun than Curtiz and Flynn's 1935
pirate movie
Captain Blood, which I found dreadfully boring.
Dustin Hoffman leaves the sandy shores and takes to the high seas
as a nasty
pirate captain in Hook.
Before getting into how spectacular the action sequences truly are (and trust me, they save the blockbuster from plundering to the bottom of the ocean), it must be said that Oscar - nominated Kon - Tiki directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg have no idea whose story the movie should actually belong to, starting out
as Henry Turner's (Brenton Thwaites) quest to free his cursed father at sea Will Turner (Orlando Bloom in a glorified cameo along with Keira Knightley
as his partner Elizabeth Swann) to locate the Trident of Poseidon subsequently lifting that curse, and while the ultimate goal of the movie for all characters is finding said artifact for different reasons, by the end it's hard to fault the audience if they have forgotten all about that plot element and are just living in the moment of Jack Sparrow and company battling an army of decomposing, undead ghost
pirates led by
Captain Salazar.
