Rather, I think there is a problem
with how kids are identified
as needing a
free or reduced
lunch and breakfast.
food manufacturers have managed to invade what should be a commercial -
free zone through vending machines and «pouring rights»; branded foods (like Pizza Hut pizzas) sold in the national school
lunch program; the sale of a la carte foods; the use of Channel One television in the classroom; the creation of textbooks replete
with math problems that use the products» names; give - aways of branded items like textbook covers; offering their products
as rewards for academic performance (read X number of books over the summer and earn a gift certificate to McDonald's); and much more.
With community support, we eliminated high - fructose drinks from school vending machines and banned sweets from classroom parties (a hard swallow for those drinking the same sugary punch
as Cookie Crusader Sarah Palin); changed the tuition - based preschool food offerings to allergy -
free, healthful choices; successfully lobbied for a salad bar and then taught kids how to use it; enlisted Gourmet Gorilla, a small independent company, to provide affordable, healthy, locally sourced, organic snacks after - school and boxed
lunches; built a teaching kitchen to house an afterschool cooking program; and convinced teachers to give - up a union - mandated planning period in order to supervise daily outdoor recess.
The Healthy, Hunger -
Free Kids Act will expand the number of children in school
lunch programs by 115,000, increase the reimbursement rate to school districts for meals by six cents and replace the junk food available outside the cafeteria, such
as in vending machines,
with more healthful options.
Brilliant in color and flavor, this creamy dairy -
free version is wonderful
with a slice of whole grain bread for a light
lunch or
as the first course at a dinner party.
But
as I've talked about quite a bit on The
Lunch Tray (starting
with my very first post), it does concern me that our menu is currently still weighted almost entirely in favor of «kid food» (or what one source in Janet Poppendieck's
Free For All calls «carnival fare»).
With apple season around the corner, my kids thought Gluten & Dairy
Free Apple Hand Pies were just the thing to make to have on hand for tucking in the
lunch box
as a special treat or for taking to the apple orchard when it is apple picking season.
As a healthier alternative to store - bought granola bars, which are often full of sugar, additives, preservatives, and trans fats (not to mention, often contain nuts), homemade, nut -

with nutritious ingredients — are a great option for school
