during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. First seen in the United States in the late 1800s, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Maltese
as part of the toy group in 1888.

dog is one of several developed
during the height of royal reign in Europe
as a
lap dog for the ladies of the court, for the royal families were the only ones who could afford to buy and breed
dogs solely
as companions.
They were imported into the US
during the 1890s and were popularised by actresses
as lap dogs and fashion accessories in their early incarnation,

as today.
