While the casting of Crispin Glover
as a disassociated loner who discovers he has the power to talk to rats is sort of inspired, «X Files» expat writer Glen Morgan's Willard suffers (and yes, I feel silly
for saying this) from a lack of character development, a forced psychoanalytic structure, and a sort of inbred Comic Book Guy fondness
for self - reference (i.e., the majority of the bit characters have animal names — a sort of thing used best in Landis's An American
Werewolf in London and Dante's The Howling: Mrs. Leach, Mr. Garter, Janice Mantis, George Boxer, and so on) that grates.
The usually quiet small town of Tarker's Mills is shaken by a series of gruesome murders,
as a nasty
werewolf seems obsessed with ridding the small town off any «weak» individuals: whether they are are alcoholics, suicidal, or simply lazy, the victims all die
for their sins in horrible circumstances.
The second film was really bad and the third one was even worse, but
for some reason, Screen Gems is intent on milking the vampire /
werewolf franchise
for as long
as they can.
Also being put to death are her servants and cohorts, including Waldemar Daninsky, a
werewolf whom she controlled

for her bidding.
And that's kind of the way it's been ever since

Horror parody was always going to be a doozy
for Landis, given that he'd previously made such classic funnies
as The Kentucky Fried Movie, Animal House and The Blues Brothers — but there's no doubt that American
Werewolf is his crowning achievement.
If the reports are true, he's also busy adapting What We Do In The Shadows
for American television,
as well
as working on a spin - off film starring the original movie's gang of reluctant
werewolves.

It may seem lazy to draw such comparisons, but «Beautiful Creatures» is about
as close to a «Twilight» clone that Hollywood has produced, trading vampires and
werewolves for witches, and although the film shows more promise than its spiritual predecessor in the early stages, its overdependence on the main love story prevents «Beautiful Creatures» from distinguishing itself
as anything other than a «Twilight» wannabe.
The whole Dracula -
as -
werewolf sequence is pretty dumb — in fact, the decrepit Lo Pan version that appears in the opening act is more frightening than any other form he takes — but credit to Oldman
for making it work, because without him in the role, «Dracula» probably wouldn't be
as fondly remembered.

werewolf mythology has quickly devolved into a series of dull and moronic sequels, none more so than «Blood Wars,» which takes the cake
