In total, around 500 heat storage hypocausts have now been documented in the Baltic Region and, according to the latest estimates, there must have been at least 800 - 1,000 of them by the end of the 15th century [1], their use spreading from monasteries and castles to other public buildings, such
as almshouses, town halls, guildhalls and hospitals.
