Overall, the Kindle for PC
app is a decent free
ebook reader, with access to the most comprehensive library of
ebooks on the planet, and a lot of free
ebook titles
as well (here's a free

As Deb said, Kindle has lots of
apps but it is likely that only the only dedicated
ebook reader you will be able to use is an Amazon device.
The only downside with having software so complex is that most
apps aren't optimized for E Ink in any way, and battery life isn't
as good
as simpler
ebook readers.
While I mostly use Amazon Kindle (NASDAQ: AMZN) personally, I've also interacted with Nook, previous Sony
eBook readers, namely PRS - 505 and PRS - 600 Touch
as well
as Apple iPad / iPhone, Android
apps.
It will also work
as a children's
ebook reader and play videos, and it comes with
apps that allow children to create their own stories and personalize them with photos of themselves and their friends.
