About the NYC Feral
Cat Initiative The NYC Feral
Cat Initiative (NYCFCI), a program of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, supports the efforts of organizations and individuals
who work to help stray and feral
cats — collectively known
as «
community cats» — and perform Trap - Neuter - Return (TNR) in New York City.
People
who feed or see
community cats should try to locate a local animal shelter or humane society, rescue or TNR group, spay / neuter clinic, or a private veterinarian to sterilize
as close to 100 % of the
cats as soon
as possible to prevent continued reproduction.
Furthermore, good samaritans
who are caring for
community cats might be unfairly treated
as owners and be cited or bullied into stopping care.
Some definitions are so broad that they can be interpreted
as including
community cat caregivers —
who we know, of course, do not own
community cats.
Why they harm
cats: mandatory spay and neuter laws ignore
community cats,
who represent the vast majority of intact
cats — only three percent of these
cats are neutered,
as opposed to 82 percent of all pet
cats.
It's important to be familiar with the history of
cat domestication,
as those
who oppose TNR often think
community cats are homeless and don't belong outdoors.

The ASPCA strongly supports «no kill»
community coalitions (
as opposed to a single organization within a
community) that are committed to reducing the number of
cats and dogs in that
community who are at risk of becoming lost, abandoned or relinquished to shelters.
And we offer incentives to encourage more adoptions such
as waiving fees for seniors when they adopt dogs or
cats who are 6 years of age or older, reduced - fee adoptions for veterans / military, frequent adoption specials, fee - free
cat adoption days, and satellite adoption centers around the
community.

as 2007, 63 percent of the animals that came through the doors — thousands of dogs,
cats and other animals — were euthanized.
The fact that to perhaps the majority of those
who acquire and study a copy of (for example) a Finance Act it constitutes what might be described
as a tool of their trades or professions or avocations in no way lessens the benefit to the
community that results if accurate versions of that Finance Act are published and not kept like a
cat in a bag to be let out haphazard.
