Roborovski hamsters (also known
as desert hamsters) are the most recent species of hamster introduced to the pet market.

hamsters were found in dry mountainous areas, such
as the Altay mountains in Mongolia, whereas Roborovski's
hamster was discovered in the Gobi
Desert.
In its natural environment,
as it scurries across the
desert floor looking for food,
hamsters and other rodents are easy targets for wild birds overhead.
Also,
as dwarf
hamsters originate from a
desert environment, too much fresh food that's high in water content can cause diarrhea.
As desert animals,
hamsters should never be submerged in water for a bath.
Because gerbils are
desert animals and produce much less urine than other pets, a litter box is not needed or practical for them, but
hamsters and mice will often use a litter box if it is placed in the corner of their cage that they have already chosen
as their bathroom.
On the other hand,
hamsters and gerbils, being
desert animals, produce less waste, so their cages do not need to be cleaned
as frequently.
