For super-bonded
dogs,
separation becomes a world - class crisis, fraught with life - threatening behaviors such
as anorexia (refusal to eat in the other's absence),
separation anxiety (barking, destructive behavior, relentless pacing, and howling), and other stress - related behaviors, including aggression.
There are many things that can happen that the
dog perceives
as scary that can lead to
separation anxiety.
Selecting the wrong type of
dog from the many
dog breeds can have disastrous results, such
as pets that have behavior problems because they don't get enough exercise or pets that experience
separation anxiety because they don't like being left alone.
A change in location is also known
as one of the possible causes of
separation anxiety development in
dogs.
As a trainer, I have had the opportunity to treat
dogs who were suffering from
separation anxiety.
Unfortunately, it's incomplete (
as most
dogs with
separation anxiety will not eat when alone, but will dive into that Kong
as soon
as their person returns home).
Often times giving a food puzzle
as you leave distracts your
dog, decreasing
separation anxiety problems.
And, when
dogs with
separation anxiety do such things
as bark, chew up the doorframe, and pee on the rug, it can be easy to jump to the conclusion that they are behaving out of spite or are just being naughty — but they are not.
Our
Separation Anxiety training completely changes your
dog's response to being alone rather than targeting only the symptoms, such
as barking or elimination.
Most importantly, never use punishment in an attempt to decrease
separation anxiety - related barking,
as it will only increase the
anxiety in an already anxious
dog.
This creates a problem for people with long commutes, but violating the guideline can cause physical problems in the
dog as well
as serious fears that include
separation anxiety.
Some people don't like crating but
as long
as it isn't for long periods the
dog will be fine, in fact he will probably feel more secure
as separation anxiety may be the cause of the problem and it will be impossible to solve if you are not there.
Most cases of adult «
separation -
anxiety» would never develop if the
dog as a puppy had been trained in the crate /
dog - door /
dog - run management system just described.
It is often stated that these types of mental exercises can help with
separation anxiety, though I can not personally attest to that,
as that is a problem I have never encountered with my
dogs.
