Before starting to work on the
eBook, lay it out
as plain text on the
editor pages first to see if any character problems crop up from the get go.
One of the most important relationships you can cultivate
as a writer is the one you have with
eBook editors.
The
editor's job is not an easy one,
as their sole purpose is to challenge your
eBook and how it's been written.
It may seem obvious, but
as a writer, you need to be receptive to the criticism and recommended changes offered by your
eBook editor.
E.g by promoting both the publishers name and the
editors name in
ebook titles (and refuse to sell to stores where these are not equally
as browsable attributes
as author and title - unlike movies currently I only rarely know the
editor / publisher of my favourite books) and redirect remaining marketing spend to fund fan / reader groups to gain «seed knowledge» to push recommendations
as to who will like their new authors (ie feeding «if you liked the books of Charles Stross, why not try Richard Winslade's new opus» into amazon's recommendation engine, but with an eye to maximise the authors /
editor / publishing houselong term brand appreciation rather than short term sales through erroneous linking only to top 10 authors).
For myself, I work with various people at different levels (critique group, beta readers, proofreader, book cover artist, and
editor) before I dare to make the manuscript public
as an
ebook and paperback.
For this, you need to open the
ebook editor you are using, like Sigil or Calibre, and set the image
as cover.
Indeed, while Ms McIntosh's company have self - publishing and
eBook publishing properly covered, their view is that their market will never desert them, because of the respect in which they are held
as selectors and
editors of the very best fiction.
So an author or
editor who is interested in having her
ebook as readable in that future state
as her paperback version of Moby Dick that's sitting on her bookshelf, the best idea is to make good, practical, EPUB3 files now.
You're not likely to make much per book, but thanks to the economics of the digital bookstore, you are likely to make a sizable amount — so long
as you gather a small team of
editors and designers, and focus on releasing

ebooks as possible.
